Every year we celebrate the ‘International Women’s Day’ on the 8th of March to acknowledge and recognize the contributions of the women power in the world!
For stakeholders in the education industry, womens day reminds us of our roles in shaping the future.
This year, the women’s day theme (For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment) perfectly depicts the need to eliminate gender biases for good.
Let’s dig deeper and discover the true meaning of this theme for our Indian women.
Be with us!
What is Women’s Day?
Back in the year 1975, the United Nations designated March 8th as the women’s day. Later, this day was celebrated in 1911 (March 19th) in the U.S. and several European countries.
Every year, this day reminds the world of the impact of women in the advancement of the world.
And like all the other parts of the world, India also needs more focus on women empowerment.
Here’s a look at all that matters on this international women’s day.
Women’s Day in India: A Call to Action
Tackling The Barriers to Learning
A gender-equal world is a dream that is still hard to imagine.
By the year 2024, India’s literacy gap between males and females stood at 17%. This means that in 2025, gender disparity is still an age-old burning issue. And problems like safety, sanitation facilities, early marriage, stereotypes, accessibility, and the burden of household chores often remain unaddressed for girls.
Solution-
In many ways, technology is perfect to benefit girls with the best possible opportunities. And with new and better options like virtual schooling, the choice is already open for Indian parents. It is now possible to prioritize girl education and overcome these barriers easily.

Women and India’s Economic Growth
Do you know that an equal participation of women in the workforce can propel India’s growth (gross domestic product or the GDP) by almost 27%?
But once again, it’s not as simple as it sounds.
53% of women never achieve their true potential in the workforce. Because they have no choice but to continue with unpaid care activities at home. Almost 97.8% of these women leave the workforce. And it is even more alarming that Indian women with higher levels of education end up spending 6 times more working hours in unpaid activities when compared to men.
Clearly, all this makes the target too hard to achieve!
Solution-
Rebuilding a care ecosystem is imperative to bring women to the forefront. And we can make this happen bychanging gender norms and normalizing concepts like shared household responsibilities without gender biases.
This international women’s day we must start encouraging Indian men to participate in household activities actively to fuel the country’s economic growth through better women participation.

Empowering Girls in STEM
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is another powerful tool to shape the lives of girls in India.
Here’s some good news!
The number of women choosing STEM courses is showing an increasing trend.
And we have already acknowledged the need to extend better opportunities for girls in the so-called ‘MALE DOMINATED’ STEM fields.
Recently in 2024, India had set a world record with 40% women enrolment in STEM fields.

But things can still get better than this.
Solution-
STEM education helps our girls to meet the demands of the global workforce. It is a gateway to the highly sought-after jobs. The best way to improve women participation in STEM fields is to start early. Girls typically get interested in STEM fields between 13 and 18 of age. And this is where we need to play roles well as stakeholders.
Early exposure to STEM learning, encouraging consumption of STEM content. And breaking the bias (that STEM fields are only for men) with open conversations can motivate our girls to join STEM fields. Let’s prepare ourselves and build confidence in our girls to help them deal with such obsolete stereotypes.
3Ls (Learning, Labor, and Leadership)
International women’s day celebration is incomplete without planning a way forward for women empowerment through a clear roadmap.
The three l’s of women empowerment, learning, labor, and leadership summarize this roadmap.
Let’s break this down for you:
Learning-
To extend the advantages of the best career options, our girls need the foundation of high-quality learning in India. Life can be too complex at times. And education is the only tool that helps our women thrive across several complexities of modern times. Today, good quality education is the first step that can help us achieve the goal of women empowerment.
Labor-
Low-paying jobs (underemployment), and unpaid work often make a woman achieve less than her potential. This year on the international women’s day, there is an urgent need to implement stringent measures and ensure our policies reach the women at the ground level. Their economic well-being is the second step towards their empowerment.
Leadership-
In 2016, only 16% of women were in senior leadership roles. By 2023, this weightage increased marginally and reached 18%.
Helping girls build the right skills to take up leadership roles in the future guarantees a fulfilling career pathway. Such women in leadership can also serve as role models for the younger generations.

The Bottom Line – Women Empowerment is Crucial for Us!
Particularly in the education sector, women’s day celebration acknowledges the need to improve the educational opportunities for female students. In 2025, India is all set to commence a new journey with a visionary education policy’s implementation. As stakeholders, we need BRACE OURSELVES to take the endeavor of gender equality and play our role in women empowerment at each level.
